The Better Part
My name is Paula Rush. I am a catechist and formation leader with the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, an approach to faith formation for children (and adults, too, truth be told!) For four years, I have published weekly Gospel reflections for children for each of three age groups (thebetterpart.net). Switching gears now, I am making these reflections available as a podcast.
Each week, select the reflection suitable for the developmental age of your child. We listen first to the Gospel reading for the coming Sunday, (or a portion of it if it is quite long). Then we take our time with the Word, moving through it slowly, wondering what it might mean.

Gospel reflection for 3-6 year olds for the 5th Sunday of Lent, year C.
Adults, the Gospel for this Sunday hardly seems fitting for 3-6 year olds! What is the face of God they need to see? I think it is the face of one who seeks us out and creates the space to be with us. I read an abbreviated passage to the child who does not need to hear about the potential violence, and let the Word of God speak through the reflection.

Adults, this is a difficult passage from the Gospels—for adults as well as children. In this reflection, I try to explain briefly why adultery is a sin, but focus mostly on the mercy of God—which is, I believe, the face of God the children need to see. If adultery has affected your family, please proceed carefully and gently with yourself and with your child. My prayers are with you.

Gospel reflection for 3-6 year olds for the 4th Sunday of Lent, year C.
The Gospel for this Sunday is the well-known parable of the Prodigal Son. We can call it, though, the parable of the Forgiving Father. The Good News is all about the father, is it not? For the 3-6 year olds, who are not yet at the age of reason, we focus solely on how good the Father is. He is someone we can love!
The Gospel is long. You may wish to skip over it and begin with the reflection at 5:43.

Both Gospel and reflection are long this week. You might want to begin with the reflection (that contains the pertinent parts of the Gospel within it) at 5:55.

Both Gospel and reflection are long. As always, the Gospel is also contained within the reflection. You could skip over the Gospel and begin with the reflection at 5:42.
